Home Decor Reset
New year, New updates
There’s something about breaking down all of the holiday décor in my home that always inspires a full reset. I spent a few days doing exactly that, clearing surfaces and putting things back where they belong, and now I have a running list of to dos that includes cleaning out closets, drawers, and all the little corners that tend to collect clutter during the fourth quarter of the year.
I’m not going to lie. As much as I’ve said I’m leaning into settling into this house, I’m sitting here two years into my lease and it still doesn’t feel 100 percent like home. I think part of that is because I was a homeowner for 14 years, which in my mind justified painting, wallpapering, reflooring, and truly investing in the equity of a space. That said, there are a lot of smaller adjustments I’m making now that I think will help the house feel more settled and more like mine.
When Grant and I moved out, I was really intentional about dividing things in a way that would help the kids feel at home in both spaces. He took the sofa and coffee table. I took the rugs and chairs. He kept the dining table. I kept the piano. It became a bit of a puzzle trying to pull together new furniture quickly and on a budget, so I leaned heavily on help from friends and brands. A hand me down crib, a sofa gifted in exchange for posting, leftover bedding from the Lake Arrowhead house, and more.
I DIYed my own drapes and got savvy with places like Wayfair. But if I’m being completely honest, the pieces I’ve owned and loved for nearly a decade are the ones I truly invested in and still love to this day. And by invested, I mean time, research, and planning. I didn’t buy them on a whim.
When designing a home, it’s easy to get sidetracked by the latest collaboration or an exciting new launch. But staying true to your vision matters more, which is why I always recommend creating a really detailed vision board before making purchases.
Here are a few things I’m currently eyeing for a small house refresh this year.
I love all things Lawson Fenning but I’ve been eyeing these club chairs for a while now. It’s been on my list of things to upgrade for my living room for the past year or so. They make so many amazing variations of fabrics and prints. I also really love the San Rafael chairs. Which are your favorite?
You wouldn’t see it on social media but there is a huge wall within the staircase area of my house. It’s opposite of the landing and there’s been a big hook there waiting for something to hang off of it for the past two years. Everyone that comes over says “You should really hang something there,” but it’s such a large space and it feels like it would really influence the entire energy of the house. But I’ve finally started to lightly browse and shop around for something unique for the wall. Maybe a tapestry or an antique Navajo blanket. What I’d really love is a huge Crystal Gregory but they’re $$$. If I’m being honest, I love this one by Cabana so, so much more. I should probably save up for it.
The “Piano Room” in my house is an adult room that my kids know to respect. It’s where I tend to sit with friends over drinks and visits but there’s a strong need for a tiny cocktail table between my two circular chairs. I have been drooling over this Lily Pad table. It’s so unique and special and I just know it will be one of those pieces I treasure forever. Starting to save up for this one now.
The very first thing I think I’m honestly going to pull the purchase plug on might surprise you…
